Chapter 168
First Call: WA7DKF in 1966

Richard Morgan 'Bix' Bixler Dec. 31, 1926 - April 5, 2021 Richard was born Dec. 31, 1926 in Portland, Ore. After graduating from Oregon State College in 1951, Dick held a number of positions in professional sales prior to finding a home and his "life's work" at The Portland Oregonian newspaper where he went on to enjoy a 25+ year career. He retired from The Oregonian in 1989 after holding the position of Retail Advertising Manager for many years. Bix was well known and well loved. During his tenure as Retail Advertising Manager he successfully guided his department through key periods of technological innovation and competitive challenge. This, while also guiding careers and providing effective leadership with a "human touch" to all who served under him.

He came out of retirement at the age of 70 to take the position of Advertising Director for The Hillsboro Argus, a position he held for 2+ years prior to finally leaving the world of work for good.

Dick lead an active and full life. As a younger man, his love for the Mountains and outdoors found him working for the U.S. Forest Service as a fire fighter. Later, as a young father, he found joy in spending time at his mountain cabin on Mt. Hood with family and friends. Later in life his greatest joy was being "Grandpa" to his 11 Grandkids where, after re-retiring, he provided each with years of fun, help and guidance. Dick is survived by his wife, Jan; sister, Suzy; daughter, Laurie; son, Jim; stepson, Mike; stepdaughter, Melady; and 11 grandchildren.

Finally, as a lifelong Amateur (Ham) Radio builder, operator and enthusiast Dick communicated with hundreds of people world wide. His personal call sign was "WA7DKF." On concluding a spoken amateur radio communication, proper etiquette calls for a "sign off" indicating the conversation to be formally ended. On behalf of Dick, his family would like to say "73s (best regards) to all! Thanks for the memories.

Most sincerely, WA7DKF."
