EMMETT DONALD MURPHY Died July 14, 2008 at home in Riverside, CA of leukemia.

He was 74 and lived in Riverside for 49 years. Born in Lawler, IA in 1934 to the late Charles T. and Madeline Murphy. Emmett graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from Iowa State College in 1956 and enlisted in the Air Force. Emmett moved to Riverside in 1959 to serve at March Air Force Base. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1984 after 28 years in the Air Force. His career included piloting many types of aircraft, including over 2000 hours in the C-141, and serving as Commander of the 728th Military Airlift Squadron at Norton Air Force Base. As an electrical engineer at Rockwell International Corporation, Emmett worked on the Apollo/Soyuz mission and was lead engineer in the design of the cockpit for the Space Shuttle Orbiter. Emmett was a devout member of St. Catherine's Parish for 49 years and enjoyed being an usher.

He is survived by his children, Mary Murphy of Houston, TX, David Murphy of Auckland, New Zealand, Barbara Walls of Ridgecrest, CA and James Murphy of Riverside, CA; his siblings, Alice Murphy of Towson, MD, Robert Murphy of Ellicott City, MD, Thomas Murphy of Chapel Hill, NC and Ellen Swartz of Longwood, FL; and his grandchildren, Ryan Wirtz and Emmett Wirtz of Ridgecrest, CA, Madison Murphy of Riverside, CA, Tyler Murphy and Evangeline Murphy of Auckland, New Zealand. His sibling, Mary Murphy, B.V.M., preceded him in death.

The viewing will be held at the Acheson & Graham Chapel at 7944 Magnolia Ave., Riverside on Wednesday, July 23 from 5:00 pm. to 8:00 p.m., with a rosary service held at 6:00 p.m. The funeral service will be on Thursday, July 24 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church at 7005 Brockton Ave. in Riverside. The committal service will be on Thursday, July 24 at 12:15 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area #2. Arrangements Entrusted To Acheson & Graham Mortuary
