Veteran of World War II. 2nd Lieutenant - United States Army Air Force. Co-pilot in a B-17 (Wallaroo). While on a mission to Gueschart, France, on January 14, 1944, the control cables were severed as a result of hit by a "Crossbow" guided missle. The entire crew made successful parachute jumps. Held as a prisoner of war, along with the rest of the crew, at Stalag Luft 1.

HAVANA, IL - Karl Barnett Arundale, 81, of 309 E. Adams died at 5:29 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Mason District Hospital.

Born Aug. 5, 1920, in Lewistown to John C. and Bertha Barnett Arundale, he married Rosemary Siltman on March 20, 1943, in Roswell, N.M. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, [ Terry ] of Brereton, Gregory (and Lisa) of Marion, Iowa, and Richard (and Jennifer) of Bruce Township, Mich.; three daughters, Sheryl (and Jerry) Payne and Linda (and Ronald) Howerter, both of Havana, and Carla (and Larry) Miller of Easton; one sister, Ruth (and Howard) Hoff of Havana; nine grandchildren; and two greatgranddaughters.

He was preceded in death by one son, John; two sisters and three brothers.

A World War II Army Air Forces veteran, he was a pilot of a B-17. His plane was shot down over France on Jan. 14, 1944, and he was a prisoner of war in Germany for 18 months.

He was an electrician at Illinois Power for 33 years, retiring in 1983. He also had owned Havana Communications.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Havana.

Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
