Al Algiers, W9HR, of Kenosha, WI, received the third Worked All Wisconsin Counties Award. He was first licensed as W9DTE, from 1940 until 1969, when he got his present call. An active county hunter, Al has 142 more counties to go, having contacted 2935 so far. Al mainly operates CW using an Icom 746 and one of three antennas, a 10 thru 40 meter vertical, and two attic antennas, a 20 meter dipole and a G5RV.


Emmet P. Algiers 1922 - 2015 Emmet P. Algiers, 92, of Kenosha, passed away peacefully, Friday, July 10, at Grande Prairie Health and Rehab. He was born on Oct. 30, 1922, to the late Emmet J. and Marie (Marquette) Algiers in Kenosha.

He was educated in the schools of Kenosha and graduated from Mary D. Bradford High School. On July 17, 1944, he entered the US Navy. He was stationed in Hawaii as a Radio Operator and Junior Monitoring Officer. He was honorably discharged May 16, 1946.

On Sept. 26, 1953, he married Mamie E. Rizzo at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Racine.

Emmet worked at Great Lakes Naval Base in Electronic Supply Office for over 25 years.

Emmet was a former member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Emmet was a life long member of the Amateur Radio Relay League, a member of the quarter Century Wireless Association, a member of the Amateur Satellite, a member of NARFE and of the VFW Post 2751. Emmet enjoyed listening to music, was a great dancer and loved taking long walks with his wife Mamie. He loved challenges and would never back down.

Emmet is survived by his loving wife Mamie, his loving daughter Barbara Hessefort of Kenosha, his grandchildren, David Hessefort and Jeanette (Maciek) Hessefort Polaczyk of Kenosha; his great granddaughter, Makayla Polaczyk and his brother Richard (Doris) Algiers of Pleasant Prairie. He is also survived by his former son-in-law James Hessefort. He is preceded in death by a sister Pat MacCready and a brother Paul in infancy.

Funeral Services for Emmet will be held on Tuesday, July 14, at 11 a.m. at the Bruch Funeral Home. Entombment with Full Military Honors will follow at All Saints Mausoleum. Visitation will be held on Monday evening from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and again on Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
