Riley, W. Champ M.D. An internist and allergy specialist in West Los Angeles for 40 years died at his home June 18th of acute leukemia. Born in Los Angeles on June 7th, 1918, a third generation Angeleno, he attended UCLA where he achieved his undergraduate degree. He graduated from Boston School of Medicine in 1947 and completed his internship and Residency at Los Angeles County Hospital and the Veterans Administration. He received a CIBA Fellowship in Geneva, Switzerland, and then moved to Munich, Germany, serving as a physician in the Army Air Force. After his residency, Champ was assigned to Travis Air Force Base as a medical officer in the US Air Force. Champ was as well known for his adventurous spirit as a sailor as for his outstanding skill as a respected doctor practicing medicine in West Los Angeles. He practiced medicine at St. Johns Hospital in Santa Monica and served on the faculty at UCLA School of Medicine. In addition to his devotion to medicine and science, Champ became an expert in each of his interests including amateur radio, breeding orchids, repairing antique clocks and mastering chess. His primary love was sailing on his beloved yachts Elyris I, II, III. With his family and friends he sailed extensively throughout the Caribbean and Europe. He navigated throughout the British Isles, the Netherlands, Scandinavian, the canals of Europe and the Mediterranean from France to Turkey and returning to Spain. His adventures were shared at the California Yacht Club as a guest speaker and member. The spirit of inquiry and exploration has been passed down to his children and grandchildren. He leaves behind his loving wife Shirley, his four sons Neil, Craig, Dale and Grant, their wives and eight grandchildren. Services will be at Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park, 1218 Glendon Ave., WLA, on Saturday, June 23, 2001 at 1:00pm, followed by a reception at his home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to United Cerebral Palsy, 6430 Independence Ave., Woodland Hills, CA 91367 in the name of Dale Riley.
