Resident of Concord, CA

Richard was born in Elmira, NY, and grew up in Corning, NY. He lived in several cities of the United States and was a Councilman for the city of Garland, TX. He retired from the Northrop Corporation in 1984 and from the Systron Donner Corporation in 1989.

He gained notice for his numerous contributions to science and industry. He was the inventor of airborne navigational instruments and seismic detectors used in various research programs related to detection of nuclear explosions. Richard was recognized by the United States Government for his ability to manage programs within budget and on time.

His amateur radio call is W5HQJ. He was active in amateur radio throughout much of his life and was a member of several radio clubs including the Mt. Diablo Amateur Radio Club of Pleasant Hill CA. He was a first responder for the Sheriff's Department of Contra Costa Co. and he enjoyed talking to people all over the world.

Richard was also a member of Branch 8, Sons in Retirement where he enjoyed much camaraderie and proudly served as Editor, Secretary and was a member of the executive Committee. In September 2017 he was the first to receive the Honorary Life Time Member Emeritus status.

Richard enjoyed cooking and was an accomplished baker. He spent numerous hours writing books and poetry that reflected his life. Richard's artistic abilities were also seen in his copper etchings and other pen and ink drawings. He was a licensed pilot, an ambitious man, who lived his credo of "Who, if not me; when if not now".

He was a kind man who will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife Joyce D. Shappee, and his children, Bruce Grant Nye of Oakland, CA, Mary Clare Dygert of Tampa, FL, Sara Jane Shappee of Sacramento, CA and Clyde Richard Shappee of Walpole, MA. He also leaves five grandchildren and their spouses, six great-grandchildren, and his brother Roger of Wickenburg, AZ and his sister Ruth of Vista, CA.
