Robert Daniel Sorkin, 81, passed away on Friday, Dec. 28, 2018, at Riverside Cottages in St. Augustine after a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Bob was born in Manhattan and lived in the Bronx and Maplewood, NJ, through his high school years. After graduating from Carnegie Institute of Technology, now Carnegie Mellon University, with a degree in Electrical Engineering, he went on to earn a PhD in Psychology from the University of Michigan.

Bob began his lifelong career as a Professor at Purdue University then moved to the University of Florida to chair the Department of Psychology with a duel appointment in Industrial Engineering. He served two years as chair of the National Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology.

While on the faculty of the University of Florida, Bob was loaned to the Air Force Office of Scientific Research in Arlington, Va., as the Manager of Cognitive and Perceptual Programs for three years, followed by two years at the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base as senior scientist.

Bob published text books and over 50 research articles. He was a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, the Association of Psychological Science and the American Psychological Society. In 2007, he retired as Emeritus Professor of Psychology and Industrial and Systems Engineering and moved to St. Augustine.

Bob is survived by his college sweetheart, Nancy, with whom he shared 58 happy years. Also surviving are his son David (Anne) and daughter, Susan (Martin) Toher and grandchildren, William, Sarah and Mitchell Toher, Allison Sorkin and Rebekkah England and his brother, Barry (Paul Kimball). He is predeceased by his parents Harry and Cynthia Sorkin and brother Bernard (Vici). Bob was a life long avid sailor and Ham radio operator for 65 years.

Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2 at Temple Bet Yam, 2055 Wildwood Drive, St. Augustine, Rabbi Fred Raskind officiating, with interment following at Craig Memorial Park.
