Stephen Leslie Johnston Sr (94) of Huntsville, AL passed away February 14, 2018 at the Veterans Home in Alexander City.

He was born October 13, 1923 in Oklahoma City, OK.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Pinkney & Hilda Mae Johnston; wife of 67 years Eva Howell Johnston; and brothers Edwin, Robert & David.

He is survived by son: Stephen Johnston Jr (Patricia); daughters: Susan Johnston Campbell (Rob) & Virginia Johnston Bailie (Dan); 7 grandchildren & 6 great grandchildren.

As a graduate of Georgia Tech in 1949, Stephen completed both Bachelors & Masters degrees in Electrical Engineering.

During WWII he served in the South Pacific & provided radio communications for the US radio broadcast of the surrender ceremony on the USS Missouri.

He was employed as a research assistant in the Engineering Experiment Station of Georgia Tech before going to work for the US Army Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal from '51-'80.

After retirement, he continued to work developing the International Radar Directory, which is used around the world & authoring two books in radar technology. He has published & presented over 50 papers at numerous international, professional & government technical conferences. He also holds two US patents. Stephen has been awarded numerous professional awards & honors including the IEEE Centennial Medal in 1984 and being elected to Georgia Tech's Engineering Hall of Fame in 2001.

Stephen & Eva were avid supporters of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. They were members of First Baptist Church in Huntsville for over 65 years. They also loved to travel. Stephen & Eva traveled around the world at least two times. They went on many family vacations and visited 45 of the 50 states with their children.

The visitation service is Sunday, February 18th from 5-7pm.
The funeral service will be Monday, February 19th at 11am at Georgia Memorial Park in Marietta, GA.
