First Call: W1QVJ   Other Calls: W4QVJ W1WW CE0ZI CE0XA

George Edmund 'Ed' Cushing, of Hendersonville, NC, died March 18, 2018. He was 93 years old. Ed is preceded in death by his cherished wife of 53 years, Julie Wharton Cushing.

Ed was born November 16, 1924 in Bayonne, NJ and graduated from Rollins College in Winter Park, FL. He worked in sales for Fortune 500 companies and was an astute stock analyst and investor. Originally licensed in 1945, he was a lifelong amateur radio enthusiast (WG4G).

He was an accomplished pianist, playing complicated pieces at recitals from a young age. He went on to lecture about 'The Evolution of Modern American Music', compose and arrange music for college productions, entertain WW II troops during his service in the Air Force and toured Europe with several bands after the war ended. Ed was a member of the Parlor Players and he and Julie enjoyed entertaining friends in their Flat Rock home where Ed wowed guests with virtuoso piano performances.

In retirement, Ed found meaningful purpose in giving his time to local non-profit organizations including Community Foundation of Henderson County, Hendersonville Symphony, Historic Flat Rock and he helped to establish the Alliance for Human Services. Ed was clearly moved by the work of non-profit organizations, particularly those that help society's most vulnerable members.

He is survived by his sons, George (Lisa) Cushing and Christopher Cushing of Friendswood, TX and many nephews and nieces.

Ed's family thanks all of the staff at Carolina Village for their compassionate and loving care of Ed and Julie throughout their later years.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 am, Friday, May 4, 2018 in Thos. Shepherd's Church Street Chapel, 125 South Church Street, Hendersonville, NC.

In lieu of flowers, Ed's family requests contributions be made to Community Foundation of Henderson County, P.O. Box 1108, Hendersonville, NC 28793 or Hendersonville Symphony, POB 1811, Hendersonville, NC 28793.
