SMITH, John V., 78, passed away April 10, 2010. He was a WWII disabled Navy veteran. He is survived by his wife, Barbara B. Smith, 2 daughters, Katherine (Kym) Lundy of Seminole, FL, and Susan M. Sams of Pinellas Park, FL, his son, John M. Smith of Gulfport, FL, 2 brothers, Joseph Smith of Madison, NJ, and Leonard Smith of City Island, NY, 5 grandchildren, Jacob John Smith, Kiya Marie Sams, Emma Lee Ming Chan Lundy, Corey Antonio Sames, and Croix Vandorn Smith, and 2 cousins, Florence Shepard of Pennsylvania, and Houghton C. Smith of Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Landon (Jack) Smith and Elizabeth Chadbourne Smith. Brett Funeral Home & Cremation Services.

John Van Dorn Smith 78, died April 10, 2010 of injuries sustained in an auto accident that same day.
John was born 05/30/31 in New York and moved to Florida permanently in 1964.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara B Smith and children Katherine (Kym) E. Lundy of Seminole, John M. Smith of Gulfport, and Susan M. Sams of Pinellas Park, and grandchildren Jacob John Smith, Kiya Marie Sams, Emma Lee Ming Chan Lundy, Corey Antonio Sams, and Croix Van Dorn Smith, his brothers Joseph in New Jersey and Leonard in New York, as well as Fluffy, his beloved Puli. Surviving cousins include Florence Shepard of Pennsylvania and Houghton C. Smith of Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Landon (Jack) Smith and Elizabeth Chadbourne Smith.
John served in the United States Navy. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Paralyzed Veterans Association.
John became interested in radios and other communication devices as a young boy and remained an active collector and fan of old radios throughout his life. He earned his amateur radio operator license, call W4ACG, in 1953. John was a long term member of the Antique Wireless Association, the Quarter Century Wireless Association, and The Tube Collectors. His other loves were boats and old cars. He remained an active boater his entire life, taking family members out on Sunbeam the week of his death. He was a member of the Antique Automobile Club of America and the Cadillac-LaSalle Club. His '61 Caddy will be at the memorial service, "if she starts."
Although not a true fan of opera, John opened his home and his heart to visiting artists and musicians of the St Petersburg Opera and delighted in all their activities from first rehearsals through post-performance celebrations.
Memorial service will be at Brett Funeral Home, 4810 Central Ave, St Petersburg, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 24. Interment of cremains will be done at Bay Pines Cemetery on an undetermined future date.
