HARTMAN Leroy C. Of Bowlby Rd., Elmira died on Sunday, January 7th, 2007, at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. Leroy was born in Osceola, PA, August 29th, 1919, the son of the late Alvin and Anna Jacobson Hartman. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Lois Hartman of Elmira; nephews, Richard (Barbara) Hartman of Pine City, Ronald (Vi) Hartman of Elmira; sister-in-law, Alma Hartman of Elmira; nieces and nephews, Karen (Bill) Cushman of Dryden, NY, Scott (Sarah) Hartman of CT, Lisa (James) Crupi of Elmira, Todd (Bo) Hartman of Elmira, Sheila (Bob) Cory of Elmira. Leroy is predeceased by his loving sister, Evelyn and brother, Harold Hartman.

Family and friends are invited to gather at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira, NY 14904, on Thursday, January 11th, 2007, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Funeral and Committal services will be held at the conclusion of the calling hours at 2:00 p.m. The Reverend James Crupi will officiate. Interment will be at the Ashland Cemetery at a time convenient with the family.

Leroy attended the Southside Baptist Church. He worked for Thatcher Glass in Elmira Heights as an electronic engineer for nearly 20 years. He was very active in amateur radio throughout his lifetime. He was a perfectionist in every aspect.

At an early age he was interested in electronics, which launched him into radio, and obtaining his license at a very early age. Leroy was instrumental in establishing the areas very first radio station.

After his graduation from the Elmira Southside High School, he entered into the United States Army, where he was made in charge of establishing the first radio stations over seas during World War II. Helping with the design, engineering, and application of communication for the United States government during war time, and awarded for such. After his four year stint in communication for the Army, Leroy returned home.

Once home he quickly made the move from radio to television, helping to establish the areas very first television station. During the 1972 flood, Leroy was instrumental in keeping the area residences and authorities in communication with his knowledge and abilities of HAM radio.
