Chapter 70
First Call: VE3BTG in 1947

It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our wonderful, smart and funny dad, Albert Livingstone Barry. Bert went to sleep for the last time on September 12, 2022 at Carleton Place Terrace.

Bert was born in Toronto on October 1st, 1930 and grew up in Twin Falls, in Northern Ontario with his parents Edith (Livingstone)and Leo James Barry, and his three brothers Bruce, Bill and Bob. He graduated from Queens University with a Bachelor of Science, Engineering in Physics 1956 and went on to complete his PhD in Physics (Semiconductor Electronics) at Imperial College, London, England in 1963 where he met and married Jean Newman. Bert and Jean had three daughters, Lisa, Karen and Julie.

He worked for the National Research Council of Canada collaborating with scientists in London and Germany. He was particularly interested in the effects of radiation in space. His projects contributed to one of the earliest Canadian satellites in space.

Bert later married Patricia Duke Letourneau in 2005 and lived in Carp, Ontario with their beloved dogs until 2021.

He had many interests and hobbies, in particular Amateur Radio. He was an enthusiastic Ham Radio contester, entering Ham competitions with participants world-wide. He spent countless hours in his "Ham Shack", contacting and collaborating with other amateur radio enthusiasts across the globe and working on his impressive radio towers even if it meant climbing to the top to make the necessary improvements himself. He loved Algonquin Park and had many trips there in his canoe, leaving us all with many happy memories of the place where he was so happy and free.

He was an amazingly intelligent man who loved talking about his interests and sharing his abundant knowledge. He was most humble, warm and down to earth and loved speaking with all whom crossed his path. His daughters and his three grandchildren; Brayden, Kaiya and Jackson all learned so much from him and are incredibly grateful for his infectious curiosity, generous spirit and kind heart. We will all miss him greatly in countless ways and we will still smile remembering his silly jokes, which made him laugh as much as the rest of us!

Rest in peace, dear Bert.

A Celebration of Life will be held on October 6th 2022 from 4-8pm at the Barley Mow in Almonte, Ontario.
