First Call: VE3BVJ in 1948

DOD July 9, 2016 Margaret Jean Hawkins (nee Calder), beloved Mom, Grandma, and friend returned to her heavenly home on Saturday, July 9, 2016 in Guelph, Ontario after a short stay in the hospital.

Jean was 91 years old.Jean was born in East Nissouri Township to Donald Robert Calder and Helen Maria Calder (McGee). She contracted polio as an 18-month-old infant leaving her leg muscles paralyzed. This experience is what Jean felt produced the stick to it nature she exhibited in life.

She had a life-long interest in amateur radio, and in 1948 was awarded the call sign VE3BVJ. Jean's interest in radio led her on what she called her great adventure in the wilds of Northern Ontario. It was in Geraldon that she met and married her husband, Jack Hawkins. They enjoyed over 50 years together, raising two sons, Rob and Tom.Jean and Jack moved to St. Catharines when Jack retired. They enjoyed many years of watching the ships pass by the veranda of their home on the Welland canal. They traveled the world by cruise ship. From Australia to Alaska, to the Caribbean and the Arctic Circle, they saw it all. Jean moved back to London after Jack's death. Her outgoing nature led to her being called the mayor of the Longworth Retirement residence. She loved people and loved helping others make the transition into retirement living.

Jean is survived by her sons, Rob Hawkins and wife Susan of Sugar Land, Texas, and Tom Hawkins of Georgetown, Ontario; her grandchildren Jennifer Balmain, and Jim Hawkins; and her great-grandchildren Evan, Audrey, Ruth, and Samuel. She is preceded in death by her husband Jack Hawkins; and her sister Isabel Kerr.Jean lived a full lifefull of people, full of optimism, full of joy, and full of faith. Today she is living a life everlasting. We can only imagine the freedom she's enjoying and the trails she's walking!

A celebration of Jean's life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 14 at The Village of Arbour Trails, 32 Bayberry Drive, Guelph ON. All are welcome.
