Elbert Clyde Mayfield, 95, of Columbus, IN passed away at 2:15am Wednesday, October 24, 2018, under the loving care of Our Hospice at Kindred Columbus Transitional Care. Clyde was born on September 10, 1923 in Memphis, Tennessee to the late William A. and Ella White Mayfield. Clyde was married to his high school sweetheart, Farris, on Easter Sunday, April 05, 1942, and had 72 glorious years of marriage until her passing on June 14, 2014. Clyde enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and served honorably until discharged in December, 1945.

Clyde and Farris were blessed with four children, Larry C. Mayfield, Terry Allen, James Daniel and Cynthia Mayfield. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00am, Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at Forest Hill Mid Town in Memphis, Tennessee with Rev. John Longworth of the Germantown Baptist Church officiating. Family and friends may call from 8:00am until service time on Wednesday. Burial will be at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis.

Clyde's vocation in life was a minister of the gospel in the Baptist Church having served congregations in Indiana at Lebaon Baptist Church, Midland, Frist Baptist Church, Salem, and the Baptist Temple in Logansport. He held a law degree from the University of Memphis, and did his divinity work at Union University in Jackson, TN, Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, KY, and held an honorary doctorate from Franklin College, Franklin, IN where he had also served on the Board of Trustees for many years.

Clyde had many extracurricular activities and passions. He was a pilot, sharing ownership in a small Cessna 172, a Ham radio operator, a woodworker, and a 'shade treeâ'e mechanic, having changed out an engine in an old VW at one time. He also built his own TV many years ago from a 'Heath Kit'! He loved to tear things apart to see how they worked, and was even fairly successful at putting them back together again. He was a regular supporter of Habitat for Humanity, & the family requests that donations be made to this worthy cause in lieu of flowers.

Clyde is survived by children, Larry C. (Linda) Mayfield of Columbus and Cynthia Mayfield of Kokomo, seven grandchildren, Wendy Mayfield of Greenwood, Michelle (Tony) Fravel of Greenwood, Brittany Mayfield of Noblesville, Jessica Jones of Corona, CA, Mark (Kara)Mayfield of Oconomowoc, WI, Byron (Rebecca) Seward of Woodbridge, CA, and Andrea Younts of Walton, seven great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Matthew Fravel of Greenwood, Alec and Emily Mayfield of Oconomowoc, Jaden, Kennedy, and Brogan Younts of Walton, and Dax Seward or Woodbridge, CA, a sister Polly Wells of Florence, KY, and several nieces and nephews in the Memphis & Knoxville areas. Clyde was preceded in death by his parents, and sons, Terry Allen (Paula) and James Daniel (Jill) Mayfield. Clyde loved Colts football and current events and was always willing to share an opinion on any of them. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, especially by his son Larry, who was his âverbal sparringâ partner!
