Byron Howard 'Mac' McCandless Ellijay, GA - Byron Howard "Mac" McCandless, age 96, passed away peacefully at home with his family on December 15, 2020 in Ellijay, GA.

He was born in 1924 in Florence, Colorado, to the late Ella Tucker and Charles G. McCandless. After graduating from high school he enlisted in the Army, and served during WWII. During the war, he was stationed in the Philippines where he served as HAM radio operator. He graduated from Colorado State University, and then attended Indiana University where he received his Ph.D. in Mathematics. While at Indiana University, he met Mary Joanne Ellington, whom he married in 1949. He had a long career as a professor of mathematics, teaching at Rutgers Western Washington State College in Bellingham, Washington, and Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.

Throughout his life, he and his wife, Joanne, enjoyed traveling, visiting Alaska, Hawaii, Italy, Costa Rica, British Columbia, Tahiti, and many more places. He loved gardening and took pride in his beautifully kept yard. He was an accomplished amateur radio operator, and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Kent, Ohio.

In 2018, he relocated from Kent, Ohio to Ellijay, GA to live closer to his children.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Joanne McCandless, and by his brothers, Phil McCandless of Montana, and Norbert, Richard, and John McCandless; one sister, Velma Karr all of Colorado. He is survived by his son, Bruce McCandless; daughter, Heather McCandless, and son-in-law, William Hay, all of Ellijay. The family has planned a private service. Bernhardt Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
