KCØBS Brian L. Short Olathe, KS QCWA # 35717 Chapter 35

Brian grew up in Hamilton, KS, a small town of 395 people.

Although he learned to love tower climbing at a young age, he was slow to join the ranks of ham radio.

He has been a tech and computer geek at least since age 10. After many years of cajoling, his Father, KØCEY(SK) was successful in convincing Brian to get his ham license at age 18 in 1987.

Brian immediately became active in the KU amateur radio club, and served as president there for 3 years. His time at KU ignited in him a love of contesting, DX, tower climbing, repeater building, and club leadership that still occupy a majority of his time today.

His prior calls include KBØBEA, NØIVS, and KFØBU.

Brian took up his fathers hobby of recruiting new hams in the family as well, and with the help of cousin WDØFHK, has managed to grow the ham family tree to include: Stepmom KBØBAW, Brothers KCØQIN, KDØJQH, Sister KDØQXP, Nephews KCØKTP, KCØQIO, & KCØZVT, Niece KCØZNO, and Margo (callsign pending) cousins WDØFHK, KUØDM,KDØJQW, KDØEVO, KDØEVW, KDØJVL & KDØIJU.

Brian is President and frequency coordinator of the Kansas Amateur Repeater Council, and Coordinator for kcAPRS.org where he actively promotes APRS to hams and served agencies and helps others install UI-View. He is President of the NEKSUN/KØHAM group which maintains 28 repeaters and 38 APRS digis throughout the Midwest

Brian currently serves as the Johnson County ARES EC, and as an active Level II spotter for Johnson County ECS (skywarn), as well as VP of the Metropolitan Emergency Coordinating Council.

Brian is an ARRL life member and Assistant Director for the ARRL Midwest Division.

Brian's most treasured service activity is teaching a ham class with KC4WCG & KDØCJW that has brought 1100 new hams into the hobby, 400 of them under 18, and 200 under the age of 13. In 2009, Brian won the Herb Brier Instructor of the Year award.

Brian is a Project Management Consultant for Compuware Corporation, where he helps Fortune 250 companies align their IT spending with their strategic goals using Compuware's Changepoint application.

In his free time, Brian likes to work contests & DX at KØKU, ski on water and snow, climb towers, build repeaters, chase tornadoes, ride his Father's Goldwing, operate in disaster drills, and play tennis with his nephews, KCØQIO, KCØKTP & KCØZVT and brother KCØQIN.
