Obituary

Ruth Behrend Jank, 93, passed away on Saturday, February 26, 2022, in San Antonio, TX where she resided for 38 years in the community of Shavano Park.  Ruth was born on August 28, 1928 in Elgin, TX and moved to a farmhouse in Fredericksburg when she was nine years old.  She was the youngest of three children, and the only girl. Ruth attended Fredericksburg High School, and as a schoolgirl could be found reading or drawing.  She left Fredericksburg and moved to San Antonio in 1950, where she worked as a bookkeeper. Ruth married Gene on February 3, 1956.  They were happily married for 55 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; August F. Behrend, Sr. and Mathilda K. Behrend, brothers; Helmut and August Jr., husband; Eugene (Gene) Jank, niece; Dorothy Schroeder, and nephew; Samuel (Sam) Behrend. Ruth is survived by her step-daughter; Janine DiVincenti and her husband Sal of Corinth, nieces; Judy Philp and husband Dan of San Antonio, Joyce Thiele and husband Bruce of Fredericksburg, and Mary Jane Ruhland of Mansfield.

Ruth's generosity, creativity, sense of adventure and humor were her most admirable traits.  She enjoyed sharing travel experiences; she would often ask, gift and include her family on cruises. Ruth enjoyed exploring the world by plane, cruising (over 30 cruises), and an Airstream trailer.   Her artistic ability became evident in elementary school, and as an adult she took lessons from professional artists.  For several decades, Ruth exhibited her Texas landscape paintings at the Starving Artist Show, where she loved to interact with people.  Ruth and her husband were amateur radio operators "hams," which allowed them to meet and talk to others around the world.  Her daily habit entailed picking up the newspaper and going straight to the comics - to laugh and lighten her day, and others.

Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Helping Our Seniors Home Healthcare service for their continuous in-home care and support of Ruth.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 15th, from 10 am-11am at Shepherd King Lutheran Church.  Immediately after visitation, services will be conducted at 11am.  She will be buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Shepherd King Lutheran Church, their Endowment Fund, or a charity of your choice.
