Arnold Carl Peterson passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, just after celebrating his 100th birthday.
Born in Irvington, New Jersey, he lived in Maplewood, Ocean, and then in Lincroft, New Jersey, for the next 59 years until moving to Whitefish in 2018 with his wife, Lois, to be near his granddaughter and family.
At a young age he became interested in amateur radio and for the next 80 years became his lifelong hobby with the call sign of AB2N.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving onboard the U.S.S. Healy as a chief petty officer. He was a graduate of Newark College of Engineering, now the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and went on to work as an engineer at the Signal Corps Engineering Laboratories, now known as the Communications and Electronics Command, Fort Monmouth. Upon retirement from CECom in 1978, he worked as a self-employed consultant until 1992. He was a member of the ARRL and Quarter Century Wireless Association. He was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the U.S.S. Healy Association. He was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Red Bank and served on the property committee for a number of years.
Born to parents that had immigrated from Sweden, he was proud of his Swedish heritage.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His greatest joy was his granddaughter, Christine, and great-grandchildren John and Autumn.
He will always be remembered for his kind and caring ways and being there for family and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Lilly Peterson, and his beloved wife of 69 years, Lois Kammerer Peterson.
Surviving are his daughter Nancy MacDonald of Whitefish; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and John Foley of Whitefish; a granddaughter and husband Christine and John Nelson of Whitefish; and two great-grandchildren, John and Autumn Nelson of Whitefish.
Funeral services will be held at Saint Peter Lutheran Church in Whitefish at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 13. Interment and military honors will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
