Jerrel was first licensed in 1951 as WN5TNL and as W5TUU the same year and currently holds an Advanced Class License. He graduated from Southern Methodist University with a BSEE in 1958 and an MSEE in 1960. He taught Electrical Engineering at SMU and Texas A & M Universities from 1958 to 1965 while completing the course work for a PhD in EE specializing in Antennas, Field Theory and Propagation with researach in Field Aligned Irregularities(FAI) under an NSF Science Faculty Grant. His enginerring career spanned 30 years with Temco Aircraft, LTV Electrosystems and E-Systems from 1955-1993 as an electronic design engineer and Member of the Technical Staff with specialization in airborne intercept and direction-finding systems from HF through the Microwave frequency ranges.

Amateur Radio interests include ARES, RACES and SKYWARN responsibilities and volunteer efforts for the Plano Fire Department. Jerrel served as Fequency Coordinator for Zone One of the Texas VHF-FM Society for five years. He is a Life Member of The Texas VHF-FM Society and QCWA. Leadership roles have included President, Plano Amateur Radio Club, President, Dallas Chapter 41 QCWA and Technical Director for HAMCOM, the West Gulf ARRL Convention. Technical memberships have included ARRL, IEEE, Association of Old Crows (Electronic Warfare), OOTC and others.
