Chapter 8

CAIN, Carl January 11, 1923 - May 8, 2011 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Carl L. Cain on Sunday, May 8, 2011, after a brief illness, at the age of 88 years. Born in Mansfield, Ohio and raised in Los Angeles, Carl resided in Maplewood, Minnesota at the time of his passing.

He leaves four children: Curt Cain (Bev), Christine Pfister, Mark Cain (Sally), and Leigh Mott (Dave); eleven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild, with another soon to arrive. He was predeceased by his wife, Lottie, in 2004 after fifty-five years of marriage.

Carl joined the U.S. Navy in 1941 and attained the rank of Aviation Electronics Technician Mate before being advanced to Officers' Candidate School until the war's end. Upon leaving the service, he joined Western Geophysical, working in the Philippines, the Western US, and Northern Alberta.

It was in Athabasca that he met Lottie Lois Bryan, marrying her in June of 1949.

In subsequent years, Carl advanced in the oil industry and joined Standard Oil of Indiana's Canadian operation, which would become Amoco Canada Petroleum, where he was first responsible for exploration in Western Canada, a time during which was a key figure in the discovery of one of the largest natural gas reserves ever found in the region. In 1977, he became president of Amoco Trinidad, and, in 1981, president of Amoco UK. From his base in London, England, he was responsible for Amoco's exploration activities in regions encompassing more than half the globe. He retired in 1984, relocating to Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands, WA, an area he highly favoured and where his final rest will be.

He was a thoughtful, introspective, and unassuming man who shunned "pomp and circumstance," yet his character left a favorable and lasting impression on many of those he met. A loving husband, and a tremendous father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Carl will be dearly missed.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of St. John's Hospital of Maplewood, Minnesota, as well as the hospice and health care attendants who provided excellent care in his home during his last weeks. The family especially thanks Mark and Sally for their compassion and care of Dad on behalf of us all.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes can be made directly to their charities of choice; however, organizations dedicated to finding a cure for Alzheimer's Disease (which took Carl's beloved Lottie in 2004) or those supporting animal welfare would be especially appreciated.
