John was born in Calgary, Alberta, on March 30, 1929, to C.H. (Jack) and Stella Smith. John attended King George, Balmoral, and Crescent Heights schools.
He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Irene, of fifty-eight years; daughters: Debbie (Joe) Sullivan of Hazelton, BC and Diane (Gerry) Pelle of Mission, BC. John always expressed great memories of spending time with his extended family and friends, especially, Jack and Marie Barclay (deceased), Bert and Naida Schroeder and family; Julian Kucher and family; Joan Brown and family; Gail Costella and family; and Patti Barclay.

John enjoyed being a grampa, hiking, reading, target shooting, flying, driving and beer. His favourite places in the world included visits to Hawaii with Irene and their friends, and hiking with his family and the Schroeders around Field, B.C.
