NU2P - Robert E. Garrett

Robert Eugene Garrett, 93 of Chenango Bridge, died Friday April 7, 2017 at Wilson Regional Medical Center.

He was predeceased by his parents Mary Ellen (Noble) Garrett and Eugene Joseph Garrett and by his siblings John Garrett, Mary Garrett, Brenda Russell, James McDonald and Anna Garrett.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years Betty (King) Garrett; a daughter and son-in-law Kathleen and Robert Amirian; a granddaughter Rebecca Amirian and a grandson Daniel Amirian. Also numerous loving nieces and nephews.

He was a teacher with the Johnson City School District and retired from the Chenango Valley School District as a guidance counselor in 1985.

He graduated from Binghamton Central High School. He was a veteran of the US Air Force in WWII where he was a radio operator on numerous missions over the Pacific.

He went to college on the GI Bill and graduated from Niagara University and then received his Master's degree from Colgate University.

During retirement he volunteered for the Family and Children's Society. He was a Ham radio operator and enjoyed spending time with his friends. He was a devout Roman Catholic and was a member of St Francis of Assisi Church, Hillcrest.

His gentle kindness was not to be overshadowed by his strong distinction between right and wrong. He had deep faith and a calm, generous nature. He loved people and his family. He was forgiving and looked for the goodness in others.

The kindness and care Dad received from the nurses and staff at Wilson Hospital, South Tower 5th floor is appreciated more than they will ever know.

Funeral Services will be held at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main Street, Binghamton, Tuesday at 2 p.m. Rev. Timothy J. Taugher will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the McCormack Funeral Home, Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
