Finding Hiram Percy Maxim ex-W1AW

When you’re in the vicinity of Hagerstown, MD, it takes but a few minutes for you to visit the gravesite of our "Father of Amateur Radio," Hiram Percy Maxim, co-founder of our American Radio Relay League. The site is but two-miles from Interstate 70.

Take Exit 29, Route 65, Potomac Street, North for 1.7 miles. Turn right on to Memorial Blvd followed by an immediate right into Rose Hill Cemetery. Bear right for 0.3 miles to Section K. Take the fork left and park just past the large plot inscribed "Hamilton" on the right. William T. Hamilton, Maxim’s father-in-law, was our Governor of Maryland 1880-1884.

On top of the large monument, view the inscriptions "Hiram Percy Maxim 1869-1936" and "Josephine Hamilton Maxim," his XYL. Also view the bronze marker for Hiram Percy Maxim provided by the Antietam Radio Club.

Mr. Maxim, later 1AW, and Clarence Tuska, later 1AY, a college student, founded the American Radio Relay League in May, 1914. It was my pleasure to meet Mr. Tuska some 50-years ago at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. He was the luncheon speaker during a conference of our Antique Wireless Association.
