John Franklin Teer, 73, died on January 22, 2016. A long-time resident of Harlingen, he is survived by his wife Carolyn Ann Cox Teer, his daughter, Jennifer Marlene Teer Rochte and her husband Russell, and his son Jeffrey Lawrence Teer and his wife Claudia. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren: Rebekah Rochte, Rachel Rochte, Sarah Rochte, Russell Rochte, III, John Rochte, Jeffrey Teer, Jr., and John Teer, and one great-grandchild, James Franklin Rochte. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Ewell and Lillie Teer, and his brothers, Ewell Teer, Jr., and Frederick Lawrence Teer.
Dr. Teer earned degrees from Stephen F. Austin State College and Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. John began his ministry with the Methodist Church in 1963 in rural East Texas. In 1972, he was commissioned as a chaplain in the United States Army and served various assignments for the next twenty years, earning the following medals: Legion of Merit; Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster; Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster; National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Armed Forces Reserve Medal; Army Service Ribbon; and two Overseas Service Ribbons.
Dr. Teer held certifications with many organizations pertaining to chaplaincy and counseling. In 1992, he moved to Harlingen to become Director of Clinical Pastoral Education at Valley Baptist Medical Center. In 2006, he retired from VBMC and maintained a small private counseling practice. After 45 years of service to The United Methodist Church, Dr. Teer retired from the Southwest Texas Conference (now Rio Texas Conference). He served as a volunteer chaplain for the McAllen sector of the FBI until his death. For fun, Dr. Teer was an FAA Certified Single and Multi-Engine Flight Instructor and an FCC Licensed Amateur Radio Operator and Volunteer Examiner.
Visitation will be on Saturday, January 30, at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home from 3 pm to 5 pm. Rev. Melissa Nelson will officiate a Celebration of Life Service at First United Methodist Church of San Benito at 3 pm on Sunday, January 31. Interment will be 10 am Monday at the Rio Grande Valley State Veteran's Cemetery in Mission.
